Senior Choir

Established in 1886, the Blackstone-Ipswich Cambrian Choir is reputedly Queensland’s longest continuously-performing choir with a long and proud history.

It is an adult SATB ensemble with membership open to singers 18 years and over, and is part of the broader organisation known as Blackstone-Ipswich Cambrian Choir Inc. It is often referred to as the Senior Choir to distinguish it from the four other ensembles within the organisation.

From Elizabethan madrigals and classical oratorio, through gospel and jazz, to contemporary modern and the vitality of new Australian works, the Blackstone-Ipswich Cambrian Choir delights its audiences with passionate and inspiring performances of some of the best of the world’s choral music repertoire. Over the years, the Choir has presented many wonderful concerts, musicals, pantomimes and theatre restaurants to packed houses, and competes annually in the Queensland Eisteddfod.

Since its inception, the choir has been fortunate in its gifted conductors who have kept the Cambrian spirit alive. It is currently conducted by David Webster, who is also currently Musical Director of the Bach Society of Queensland and Director of Music at Holy Trinity Church, Fortitude Valley and served as Musical Director of the Queensland University Musical Society (QUMS) from 2006 to 2015.

In 2006, the choir commemorated 120 years of continuous performance and in that year was awarded the title Queensland Eisteddfod Champion Choir. In recent years, the choir has collaborated in a series of major performances including Haydn’s Creation with the Symphonia of St. Andrews; an inspirational Evening with Aled Jones; Ipswich Gala Concerts with the Ipswich City Orchestra; the Ariel Ramirez Misa Criolla accompanied by instrumental ensemble “Walisuma de los Andes” and featuring soloist Jason Barry-Smith; Handel’s Messiah with the Sunshine Coast Oriana Choir and community events including the Ipswich Mayor’s Christmas Carols.

The Blackstone-Ipswich Cambrian Choir is available for hire for special events.
